In its earliest days, Father Fitton and the parishioners of St. John's reached out to the Passamaquoddy as well as to the poor Irish catholic laborers who built the Blackstone canal and the early railroads here. Later years would see the foundation of St John's Parish Grammar School.

Our mission of reaching out to the poor has never stopped. Located in the heart of downtown Worcester, our elegant spire rises across the railroad tracks and the highway, and beckons all believers, especially immigrants and the poor to a place of solace and hope.

Our flock embraces Southeast Asian, Spanish and African parishioners. We have been the spiritual center for French-Canadians, Polish and Lithuanians. For many years we were the spiritual home of Vietnamese Catholics.

For decades, our food pantry has provided sorely needed food to more than 1,000 people annually. Our Free Meal Program serves more than 1,000 people each month. We provide meetings for those in Alcoholics Anonymous. We reach out to those recently released from prison and offer spiritual guidance and moral support.

Our spiritual mission is to combine the corporal and spiritual works of mercy and daily acts of charity for all. Many who need assistance find their way to our doors.
